Much heartfelt sorrow goes out to all in regards to this sad event. We enjoyed you Moko.. please know that you made a difference in this family’s life here in Canada.
It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the passing of Moko (short for “Mokotahi”, a maunga on the Mahia Peninsula). Moko, three-years-old as of July 2009, resided at his home in Mahia Beach for two and a half years from 2007 to September 2009. His association with humankind was originally formed with a local Mahia resident Bill Shortt who found him playing in the waters off Mokotahi, Mahia Beach. At the beginning of September 2009 Moko moved 80km up the coast to Waikanae Beach, Gisborne, and in January 2010 he moved to Whakatane and Tauranga-moana in the Bay of Plenty. People from Mahia have expressed a desire to have Moko returned to his turangawaewae (place he was first loved) beside his maunga (headland) Mokotahi. I think this is a fair call and most appropriate outcome.
